Proposals for crossing in rude health

HUNDREDS of names put forward for the new Forth Replacement Crossing have been ruled out – for being too offensive.

More than 7600 different names were suggested, with a panel of seven now set to select their favourites. But ten per cent of ideas from the public were deemed inappropriate after including swear words, racist terms or other offensive language.

Ideas put forward include the Kingdom Bridge, St Margaret’s Bridge and the Third Forth Bridge. One person suggested that all the bridges could collectively be the Kevin Bridges, in homage to the Glasgow comedian.

John Yorkston, director of the Scottish Chamber of Commerce, who is on the panel, said: “We’re looking for a name that will stand the test of time.

“It should be something relevant, clearly understood, not too obscure or open to misinterpretation.”
