Police foil gang's attempt to flood islands with heroin
A CRIME syndicate's plans to flood Shetland with cheap heroin to open up a new market has been foiled by police, a court heard yesterday.
Drug courier James Farrell was jailed for five years and three months after being caught with 25,000 worth of the drug.
Farrell, 43, was the second Liverpudlian to be found with heroin arriving at the harbour at Lerwick within two days.
George Beardwood, 48, a father of eight, was jailed for five years last week after he was discovered with more than 11,000 of heroin as he left a ferry at Holmsgarth on 27 September.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard Farrell had been stopped by police when he arrived at the same terminal a day earlier.
James Wolffe, QC, said: "Police gathered intelligence a criminal syndicate in Liverpool had identified Shetland as a lucrative market for their heroin."
