Police make arrests at bin lorry blockade

THE first arrests in the ongoing Edinburgh bin protests were made when a group of demonstrators blockaded a private bin truck on the Royal Mile for nearly half an hour.

Five people were detained and taken to St Leonard's Police station on Friday evening, where they were later charged under the Civic Government Act with "obstructing the passage of another", before being released in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Around 15 people surrounded the lorry, immobilising it on the Royal Mile, at the top of Blackfriars Street.

A spokesperson for the demonstrators, who included members of the IWW union and Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty, said: "We will not be intimidated by the arrests and we will be back on the streets taking action."

A police spokesman said: "Five males were arrested and charged. All five were released to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date."
