Police hiring short-term

A SENIOR officer has been appointed as acting deputy chief constable at Lothian and Borders Police until the new national force begins in April.

Bill Skelly will take on the role after previous incumbent Steve Allen got a top job with the single force.

DCC Skelly, who will report to chief constable David Strang, has been with the force since 1990 and was seconded to Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary for Scotland for two years in 2008.

He is a keen cyclist and two years ago undertook a 466-mile London to Edinburgh bike challenge with six colleagues.

Before that, DCC Skelly, above, spearheaded Operation Pentameter, a UK-wide crackdown on the trafficking of women to work as prostitutes.
