THE legal bill faced by Lothian and Borders Police soared to nearly £340,000 last year, new figures have revealed.

The force paid out the cash to lawyers between April 2011 and March, compared with a bill of £130,000 for the previous year.

Among last year’s costs were £70,000 for legal cases involving firearm licenses, more than £1000 on

nightclub licenses, and £86,000 defending court actions.

The force also spent nearly £12,000 raising its own actions in court.
