Plug pulled on plans for electric car scheme
A PIONEERING attempt to bring electric cars to the streets of the Capital has been scuppered by the city's tram project, one of its main backers said today.
A consortium including Japanese car firm Mitsubishi and the Royal Bank of Scotland had hoped to trial the Mitsubishi's i MiEV vehicles in Edinburgh as early as this summer.
The consortium driving the project – led by Edinburgh-based Ash Gupta – claim they were unable to finalise the necessary paperwork because council officials were too busy with the ongoing tram dispute.
Edinburgh had been among a number of cities vying to become the first in the UK to try out the battery-powered vehicles.
The Government's Technology Strategy Board is funding the pilot scheme.
Councillor Phil Wheeler, the city's transport convener, said a late change to the terms of the proposal had resulted in a council rethink.
