Pieces made up huge plate

Archaeologists have revealed fragments of a Roman plate buried in East Lothian made up one of the largest known examples in the empire.

The pieces were discovered in a silver hoard at Traprain Law near Haddington more than 1500 years ago.

New technology has enabled the National Museums Scotland to digitally reveal the plate was 70cm in diameter.

Museum research officer Alice Blackwell said: “We are thrilled that the digital reconstruction has provided us with such a unique insight into the contents of this treasure hoard.”
