Perth is in the top three towns competing for Diamond Jubilee city status, according to a YouGov poll.

The Scottish town received the least number of negative votes of all of the competing Diamond Jubilee city status towns, and received positive votes from 11 per cent of those questioned.

It is competing against front runners Bournemouth and Reading- as well as 24 other candidate towns spread across the UK.

London’s Tower Hamlets district was voted least deserving of city status.

The most recent new city statuses to be handed out heralded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002, and included Stirling, as well as Preston in England, Newport in Wales and Lisburn and Newry in Northern Ireland.

The Kirk would not be hypocritical if it was to be the Wee Twee.

The council had an unwritten policy of not allowing any planning permission from companies that were bigger than their small businesses.

I was born there and at school we were asked where we were going when we passed our exams - we were born for export because Perth would not allow itself to grow.

When you consider that Perth and Dundee were almost the same size once, then you have to realise why Perth lost city status in the first place.

I shall try again. The main trouble with Perth is that it has refused to allow natural expansion for more than a century.

I think you will find, hootsmon journalist, that if you wake up or sober up, that Perth is a city. More Jubilee nonsense to numb the senses
