Parts of zoo shut down as monkeys flee
PART of Edinburgh Zoo had to be closed to the public after a group of monkeys escaped from their enclosure.
The barbary macaques were being moved to a new enclosure on Friday when some of the animals made a bid for freedom.
Zoo officials said the monkeys posed no threat. Some were caught, but an undisclosed number remained loose in the grounds.
Pathways around the macaque enclosure were closed while the bid to recapture the animals continued. A zoo spokeswoman for said they were still within the zoo grounds.
She said: "Macaques are highly social animals and the group will remain together so they are highly unlikely to stray far from the enclosure.
"After all the macaques have returned to their enclosure we will look into how these animals escaped and take steps to minimise the possibility of this happening again."
