Painter Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s centenary celebrated at City Art Centre

A MAJOR exhibition marking the centenary of the birth of one of Scotland’s most innovative 20th century artists opens at the City Art Centre tomorrow.

Painter Wilhelmina Barns-Graham was born in Fife but trained at Edinburgh College of Art under the likes of SJ Peploe. The free exhibition, the first to look at the artist’s links with Edinburgh, is held in association with The Barns-Graham Charitable Trust and runs until February 17.

Councillor Richard Lewis, the city’s culture and sport convener, said: “The City Art Centre is delighted to be showing this major exhibition celebrating the centenary of the birth of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham.

“It is fascinating to watch her progress from Edinburgh College of Art in the 30s, where she studied under Peploe and Gillies, to St Ives in the 40s, then the epicentre of British modernism. Maintaining her links with Scotland, she remained at the cutting edge of contemporary art for over 60 years, and this exhibition is testament to her powers of continuing creativity.”
