Occupy Edinburgh to appear in court over Meadows eviction
The protesters are planning to stay on the Meadows which they declare to be common land
OCCUPY Edinburgh will appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today as the city council seek to evict them from the Meadows park land in the capital.
The protesters, who installed a new encampment of tents and infrastructure at the site on 30 January, are adamant they will stay on the site, which they declare is common land.
Edinburgh City Council are seeking to evict them on the grounds that the group did not apply for the right to camp there, which in any case would have been denied.
Mike Ferrigan of Occupy Edinburgh, said: “Occupy Edinburgh is going nowhere. The Council has broken our trust, and was not prepared to talk despite the fact they passed a motion saying they supported our aims and sentiments.
“There will be an evolution in direct action in the city - they have not thought this through.”
Councillor Robert Aldridge, the city’s environment leader, said yesterday: “The council’s position is quite clear – we do not allow camping on the Meadows and we have asked the Occupy Edinburgh protesters to leave. We are currently seeking legal advice and will continue to liaise with the police and protesters.”

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 09:43 PMTaking the 'Trams' debacle as an example the 'Legal Advice' the Edinburgh Council are seeking to shift the protesters will probably add another few hundred thousand pounds to the Council Tax. No matter what you think of them, this is a World wide protest against against how our Capitalist system has been corrupted by the Bankers. Are the detractors here just plain thick? From they way they write----

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 07:56 PMUnless somebody stands up and protests, I don't just mean from the comfort of your own home from behind a computer screen, against this messed up banking system, nothing will change. If you agree with bankers paying themselves huge amounts then protest against the protesters. If you think that they shouldn't be Fat Cats, then support the protesters. I support the protesters!

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 07:47 PMThe post by CashKing, uncouth though it is, is typical of the type of mentality which rules the banker board room. The Occupy Movement does not want to be outisde in the cold. However, it is important that someone takes on the banking executives who are still paying themselves even many millions each in annual bonuses. As as example John Hourican and Ellen Alemany of RBS are due to garmer 5.9 million pounds each as the 5000 staff at RBS face the sack. It should be noted that the small people who do the work at the branch are not rewarded with bonuses. CashKing may want us all in prison. We want bank executives to go there, as they deserve it, not us.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 07:08 PMCommon land... For which we, the people of Edinburgh pay to keep clean and tidy and fit for our use. This land is not for the use of these wasters! Get a job, pay some taxes and then come back to the common ground, but even then you will have to abide by the rules, not sitting behind your stolen mills barriers lighting fires. Or maybe I have got it all wrong... Maybe it is cool to sit there on the Meadows and claim benefits...
