Protesters from the Occupy Edinburgh Movement set up a new encampment on the Meadows today.
Five protesters who pitched their tents early this morning and said that they intend to make it a new permanent encampment due the area being on “public land”.
The previous protest in St Andrew Square lasted just over three months but was called off last week.
City centre management company, Essential Edinburgh, had began moves to evict them but protesters voted to leave voluntarily.
Pete Nicholson, 26, of the Occupy Edinburgh Movement, said: “The Meadows is common land and we have the right to use it. We have reinforced our safer spaces policy after learning from some of the mistakes made at St Andrew Square.
“We will enforce a strict no-alcohol policy on site and will be providing valuable community events and educational information for the public.”
The camp was established in October 2011 as part of a global protest movement wanting to challenge social inequalities and promote democratic government.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 05:32 PM#7. We at Occupy are gainfully employed. Our noble task is to out banking executives like yourself, who are robbing the banks and the people blind. Even though you have the newspapers on your side, and they are vilifying us, this sentiment can easily change. You lobby the government. We are doing the same now, and they are responding by cutting out your bonus. You are seen now by the public as being degenerate and brutal parasites.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 05:28 PM#11. What do mean an anti-Semitism policy? We at Occupy do not have an anti-Semitic policy. Do you?
I'd rather be on holiday
Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 09:18 AMThe Meadows isn't a campsite. Get rid of them. All this conceited sanctimonious garbage about "providing valuable community events and educational information for the public.” They have a massively inflated idea of their own importance.

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 12:02 AM#8 ayebee, I agree with you when you said, " Occupy are not arrogant. Neither are they conceited, complacent or condescending. They do not know everything. Their only aim: to disseminate knowledge they know to be true. It is lack of education in life. It is general knowledge not commonplace among the people. It is disinterest, apathy AND arrogance itself that turn a blind eye to the ills besetting this world. There for all to see if only they looked. Monday, January 30, 2012 at 11:01 PMalso, how will they enforce the no alcohol policy when it was the organisers and so call love police like pete nicholson who were the worst offenders. How about a no antisemitism policy ? Where is that one ?

Monday, January 30, 2012 at 10:58 PMwow, how significant. Now the meadows will have 30 tents with 3 people sleeping in them occaisionally rather than St Andrew sq. and this means ?.....

Monday, January 30, 2012 at 09:30 PM#14 Disseminate knowledge as much as you like (good), just don't pitch your tents illegally (bad). I'm one of the 99% who get p'd off about the excesses of capitalism, but also get p'd off when a tiny minority spoil my enjoyment of public spaces.

Yet media, movies, games and all manner of distractions turn our attention. You may not want Occupy but you are probably part of the 99% same as me and perhaps if you listened to what they had to say you may find you agree with their philosophies. Sustainable use of the planet. Redistribution of its wealth and resources in a more equitable manner. Proper regulation of business at the global level on which the operate. You, me, really poor people, the starving in Europe, lowland mountain gorillas, the amazon....... every living thing deserves to have a safe existence supported by this little blue dot we all inhabit. That is why, as the 99%, we should all aim to change things for the better. Monday, January 30, 2012 at 05:46 PMThey have no more 'right' to camp there than in St Andrews Square. They went too quietly from the Square. Now we know why.

Monday, January 30, 2012 at 03:28 PMThey will be providing "educational information for the public"! Who do these arrogant upstarts think they are? If I need to further my education then I'll turn to a professional institution, not them. What do the National Union of Teachers have to say about this? Do these people not understand that they are not wanted? Talk about thick-skinned.
