Occupy Edinburgh group moves on
THE Occupy Edinburgh protest camp has left the Meadows following negotiations with the city council.
A legal move to evict the protesters from the site was officially dropped yesterday after campaigners agreed to leave voluntarily.
Council officials have said they will look to help the group find a space in Edinburgh to hold regular meetings so their political activism can continue.
Sheriff Elizabeth Jarvie was informed the occupiers had removed themselves and their belongings from the Meadows, and solicitor for the council Fiona Read asked for the action against them to be dismissed.
Occupy Edinburgh representative William Black said the movement would continue in another form.
“Removal of the camp does not mean Occupy Edinburgh is away,” he said.
“We will now prepare for spring and summer and get our message across by occupying and by other means.”
