Numbers add up for Mariya

A CAPITAL trainee accountant has won the highest accolade in her industry – beating off competition from 856 other candidates.

Mariya Semenkovich, an employee with KPMG and originally from Russia, studied at Edinburgh University for a year before successfully completing her professional qualifications from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS), winning the ICAS Gold Medal for the highest score in her year.

Mariya, who joined KPMG in August 2009 and is now an audit assistant in the financial services team, said: “The move from Russia was daunting but Edinburgh’s position as one of Europe’s leading centres for financial services has meant I have been able to develop my career to a high standard.”

Catherine Burnet, head of financial services at KPMG in Scotland, said: “Mariya is an outstanding trainee who displays all the skills needed to succeed in an extremely challenging sector. We are delighted with Mariya’s achievements.”
