New legal move to ban smacking children
A FRESH legal effort is being mounted to ban the smacking of children.
A Labour MSP has lodged an amendment to proposed family law legislation - to be debated next week by Holyrood's justice 1 committee - which would ban physical punishment.
The attempt is being made by Marlyn Glen, MSP for North East Scotland, with the backing of children's charities.
But Hugh Henry, the deputy justice minister, attacked the move, saying a similar bid had ended in defeat in 2002. "Parliament has expressed its will very clearly, and that should be given time to bed in," he said today.
The Executive attempted to ban the smacking of children under three in 2002 but Jim Wallace, the then justice minister, had to drop the plan after a Holyrood committee said it was unworkable.
