New scheme will speed up planning bids

PLANNING applications will be speeded up under a new procedure adopted by East Lothian Council.

From August, most local decisions will be made by a council official, instead of by the planning committee. This will make it quicker for individuals or companies to secure permission for changes to their homes or new developments.

Consent for listed buildings and larger developments will still be decided by councillors, and they will also be responsible for conservation areas.

Councillor Paul McLennan, East Lothian's environment spokesman said he was confident that the proposals would speed up the process without affecting the degree of scrutiny.
