Museum fights to stop loss of Flying Scotsman
THE Flying Scotsman could be sent abroad when its sold off next month if British bidders cannot find cash to save it, rail experts have warned.
The 81-year-old train has been put up for sale by its private owners in a system of sealed bids, with the process set to close on 2 April.
Two weeks from the deadline, York’s National Railway Museum has raised more than 200,000 of the estimated 1 million needed to buy it.
The owners admit that they may be forced to allow the much loved train to go abroad and are selling it after plans to house it in a new railway museum in Edinburgh fell through.
But the National Railway Museum is stepping into the breach and has called for public support in its bid to keep the "national icon" in the country.
