Murray in hurry to compete in Great Edinburgh Run

CAPITAL Olympian Freya Murray is expected to receive a hero’s welcome from hometown fans when she races in the Bupa Great Edinburgh run next month.

The 28-year-old, who was a late replacement for Paula Radcliffe in the London 2012 Games, was the first British marathon runner to finish the race, ending in 44th position.

Ms Murray, who attended Heriot-Watt University, is now due to compete in the Edinburgh Run in Holyrood Park on Sunday, October 7.

“I’m sure there will be a fantastic reception awaiting her,” said Peter Riley, the elite athletes manager for the event. “Although she now runs for Chester-le-Street, a north-east England club, she is a Scot through and through.

“The distance of 10 kilometres may appear very short for Freya, but in the past three years as she has progressed to the marathon she has twice won the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run and the Great Ireland Run, both 10km races.”

Thousands of runners of all abilities are expected to take on both the 10k and 5k courses while hundreds of youngsters are due to sign up for the Bupa Junior and Mini Great Edinburgh Runs.
