MPs' tribute to Fletcher

DARREN FLETCHER has been congratulated at Westminster on becoming the youngest Scottish football captain since World War Two.

Midlothian MP David Hamilton has put down a Commons motion praising his achievement. And he has persuaded several English MPs to sign it.

In total, 19 MPs have backed the motion, including East Lothian’s Anne Picking and exiled Scots Gordon Prentice, who represents Pendle in East Lancashire, and John McWilliam, who sits for Blaydon on Tyneside.

But England supporters including Wolverhampton’s Dennis Turner, Tyne Bridge’s David Clelland and captain of the parliamentary football team Stephen Hepburn, who sits for Jarrow on Tyneside, have also signed.

The motion reads: "We congratulate Midlothian youngster Darren Fletcher of Manchester United Football Club on his achievements with Scotland’s national team and at the age of 20 years becoming the youngest post-war Scottish team captain."
