Motorbike scheme revs up for chance of £185k

A SCHEME aimed at transforming troubled teenagers into off-road motorcycling enthusiasts is among the bidders for £185,000 of council funding.

The Bridge Centre Motorcycle Project in Haddington, which was set up in 1999, wants to teach 24 young people a year to ride bikes and maintain them.

The project has applied for nearly 15,000 in funding from East Lothian Council's community safety forum to run the initiative.

A number of bidders have put forward applications for a slice of the 185,000 funding available.

Among the other bidders are Lothian and Borders Police, who have applied for 4,500 to distribute "Dump the Dealer" leaflets to every home in the county encouraging people to report drug peddlers.

The Tranent Youth and Community Facility – known locally a s Recharge – has requested more than 13,000 to provide youth cafe sessions on Saturday nights to keep youngsters off the streets.
