Mod extended by two days as interest soars
ORGANISERS of the Mull Provincial Mod have had to extend it by two days because of the level of interest.
The contest, on 7 and 8 September, will now continue until 10 September to include a day for children's competitions and one for seniors' events.
The move is seen as a boost to the provincial events held across the country and the Royal National Mod after recent criticism by Inverness councillor Ken MacLeod that the Gaelic festival "bored the pants off people".
A spokesman for the Mull Provincial Mod, one of the last events before the Royal National Mod in Fort William next month, said: "Mull Mod organisers, who work very closely with organisers of the Royal National Mod, feel that [the level of interest] proves that the Gaelic language is thriving amongst the next generation and that this growth is largely due to the provincial mods staged throughout Scotland and the annual national mod."
Murdo Morrison, promotion manager for the Royal National Mod, said: "Mull Provincial Mod is always a very popular, enjoyable and well managed event."
