Minister deals blow to national park extension campaign
THE Scottish Executive yesterday came out against a move to extend Cairngorms National Park - already the largest in the United Kingdom - by 300 square miles.
Sarah Boyack, the deputy environment minister, said including Highland Perthshire in the designated area would cost up to 150,000 a year more.
She said it would disrupt work on the park plan and a Cairngorms local plan, and claimed changing the boundary would require primary legislation.
Ms Boyack was giving evidence to Holyrood's environment and rural development committee, which is considering a member's bill from John Swinney, the North Tayside MSP.
Mr Swinney wants to extend the park to include the Forest of Atholl, including Blair Atholl, the Beinn Udlamain mountain group to the west of the A9 and an area including Glas Tulaichean and the Spittal of Glenshee.
The committee will give its findings next month.
