Mercer family accept apology from Salmond
THE family of the late Heart of Midlothian chairman Wallace Mercer have accepted an apology form First Minister Alex Salmond over comments made by the politician.
The First Minister, a Hearts supporter, expressed regret for drawing comparisons between Mercer's time in charge of the club and the current regime of Vladimir Romanov, and insisted he meant no disrespect.
He had said that he didn't like Wallace Mercer, his politics or his attitude.
Ian Mercer, Wallace's son, said the family had no desire to prolong the dispute, and had simply wanted to defend Mr Mercer's memory. "It's an apology of sorts," he said. "He's tried to justify his comments. But, really, we've said our bit now and I think this knocks it on the head."
Mr Salmond had said in an interview that "Vladimir Romanov, for me, is a kind of 'Baltic States Wallace Mercer' – he is unsafe hands."
