Men speed off after attack on city cyclist

A CYCLIST was knocked off his bike and kicked as he lay on the ground by three men who attacked him after pulling up in a car.

The 30-year-old man was travelling along Madeira Street and approaching the junction with Portland Place in Leith at around 11.45pm on Monday when he was assaulted.

Police today said the suspects' car pulled up beside him and three men jumped out. They kicked the victim, causing him to fall from his bike to the ground, and then continued to kick him. The attackers got back in the car and drove off in an unknown direction.

The victim was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he was treated for injuries to his shoulder.

The suspects are all described as white, 20 to 22 years old, of average build, and wearing jeans and tops.

A police spokesman appealed for information and said: "This was an apparently unprovoked attack that left the victim badly shaken and requiring hospital treatment.

"We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the assault to contact police as a matter of urgency. Similarly, anyone who has any information that can help us identify the suspects should also get in touch."

Anyone with any information should contact police on 0131-311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800-555 111.
