Man rescued from 14th floor of burning towerblock
The fire at the block of flats in the Maryhill area of Glasgow
A man has been rescued from the 14th floor of a burning block of flats in the Maryhill area of Glasgow in the early hours of the morning.
Around four hours were spent evacuating the flats while firefighters tackled the blaze.
Crews were called to the fire in Wyndford Road at around 2.40am and were said to be on the scene four minutes later.
Firefighters rescued the man from a balcony and evacuated all the flats above the 14th floor.
Three people were given precautionary check-ups by ambulance crews at the scene and people were allowed back into their homes shortly after 6am.
Chief officer of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Brian Sweeney said: “This was an exemplary response from our firefighters who were on the scene only four minutes after receiving the first call.
“While our work to prevent fire, such as the excellent winter safety campaign, is vital, this incident is a sobering reminder that fires still occur and, when they do, communities need a prompt and efficient response from the emergency services such as we saw here.
“This was a textbook operation by our firefighters and shows that our crews are trained and ready to answer the call to protect the communities they serve.”
