Man breaks leg after being hit by car in city

A MAN was thrown over the windscreen of a car as he crossed a city centre road this morning.

The 45-year-old suffered a suspected broken leg and a shoulder injury in the incident, which happened at the junction of York Place and Broughton Street, next to the Conan Doyle pub, shortly after 5am.

A rapid response paramedic was on the scene in minutes, followed shortly by an ambulance which took the man to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. His injuries are not thought to be serious.

Police said there was no suggestion that the driver was at fault, and are treating the collision as an accident.

The junction of York Place and Broughton Street is currently affected by tram works.

Local MP Mark Lazarowicz has heard several complaints about pedestrian safety in the area since the tram works began.

He said recently: "There is a problem in the way that the pedestrian paths change regularly."
