Man acquitted of attempting to murder baby

A MAN has been acquitted of attempting to murder an 11-week-old girl.

A jury returned a majority not proven verdict against Derren Maclennan, 41, of Manse Crescent, Tain, Easter Ross, after a three-week trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.

He had been accused of repeatedly shaking the baby and striking her head against a solid surface on 23 February, 2010, at a house in Tain.

Maclennan told the jury that he had been helping the child’s mother by looking after the baby. He said he was holding the girl and tripped and fell with her on to the floor.
