Man, 38, held over murder bid and death

A MAN is being held over the death of a woman and the attempted murder of her husband, police said last night.

The 63-year-old woman collapsed following a disturbance at her home in Polo Gardens, Troon, Ayrshire, at about 7.45pm on Friday. She died a short time after being admitted to Kilmarnock’s Crosshouse Hospital.

Strathclyde Police said the woman’s husband, 64, sustained serious facial and chest injuries during the incident. He too was taken to Crosshouse Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The force said a 38-year-old man is being held in custody in London in connection with the incident. Officers are travelling to the city to detain the man and bring him back to Strathclyde.

A post-mortem examination is expected to take place to establish the exact cause of the woman’s death.

Further details of the incident have not been released, but police said it was not a shooting.

Meanwhile, a man has been arrested in connection with the death of another man following a disturbance at a flat.

Stewart Gillespie, 53, was found seriously injured at his home in Glencairn Road, Paisley, Renfrewshire, at around 10.25pm on Wednesday. He died at the scene.

Strathclyde Police said a 28-year-old man has been arrested and is being held in police custody in connection with the death. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal. The man is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday.
