Mail chiefs give Scotland's first-class saint stamp of approval

ROYAL MAIL made history today when it issued the first ever postage stamp carrying an image of Scotland's patron saint, St Andrew.

To mark the occasion, First Minister Jack McConnell MSP presented a special framed edition of the stamps to Scotland footballers Gary Caldwell and Kenny Miller.

The Celebrating Scotland stamp issue also features the Lion Rampant and the Saltire. Mr McConnell made the presentation at Edinburgh Castle, which also features on one of the set of four stamps issued to coincide with St Andrew's Day.

The First Minister said: "This is a historic occasion and a great way to mark St Andrew's Day 2006.

"St Andrew's Day gives all of us the chance to celebrate Scotland. Our country's past and present should be celebrated with pride."

Celtic star Caldwell also praised Royal Mail for marking St Andrew's Day. He said: "All members of the Scotland team are aware that we are not just footballers, but ambassadors for Scotland when we represent our country.

"That is why we are delighted to help to launch these stamps to celebrate Scotland and St Andrew."
