EDINBURGH has been named the UK’s best city – for the 13th year in a row.

Scotland’s capital was named ahead of Bath and York in the annual Guardian/Observer poll.

Caledonian MacBrayne, which serves islands on Scotland’s west coast, was named best ferry company in the same survey, ahead of North Link and North Sea Ferries.

Edinburgh has come out on top in the latest poll despite being edged out by London in a separate survey, by Travellers’ Choice, earlier this year.

Council leader Andrew Burns said: “To win best UK city for the 13th year running really is quite an achievement for Edinburgh, especially in the Olympic year when so much attention has been on London.”

The organisers stated: “For some, 13 is an unlucky number. But not for Edinburgh, which dances
off into the night again
as the top UK city for the 13th year on the trot.”

Earlier this year, Edinburgh was named best large European city for foreign investors in the annual awards organised
by the Financial Times.

It was also ranked top city in the UK, and eighth in Europe, in terms of quality of life in the most recent European Cities Monitor.
