Lothians' race crimes shame

MORE than 40 people in the Lothians were jailed for racist crimes in a single year, new figures have revealed.

A total of 36 people were jailed at Edinburgh Sheriff Court for crimes including racially aggravated harassment and racially aggravated conduct between April 2007 and March last year.

The figures, released in a parliamentary answer by community safety minister Fergus Ewing, showed that 242 appeared in court to face charges relating to racism.

Community service was given to 19 of those charged, 123 were fined, 13 were given other punishments and 51 were found not guilty. In East Lothian, two people were jailed and in West Lothian five.
