Lothian in dark to highlight climate change
LIGHTS in council buildings throughout East Lothian are set to be switched off as part of the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour 2009.
The exterior lights in 67 of East Lothian Council's buildings from schools to community centres will be turned off for an hour this Saturday from 8.30pm.
The aim of Earth Hour is to make a statement of concern about climate change and help to convince world leaders to take action.
Council environment spokesman Paul McLennan said: "The Earth Hour is a dramatic initiative to highlight the problem of climate change and the challenge of creating more sustainable lifestyles in the future.
"In East Lothian it also marks the start of a year of actions on sustainability planned by the East Lothian Environment Forum. We will announce details soon."
In 2008, 50 million people across 35 countries switched off their lights for an hour.
