Lemonade gives suppers extra sparkle
PRINCE Charles picked up the secret to the perfect fish supper on his visit to Edinburgh: lemonade.
The prince helped Britain’s champion young fish-frier rustle up the national dish on board a marine research vessel, then had an insight into his award-winning techniques.
Cardiff fish shop worker Zohaib Hussain told the prince that he only uses Maris Piper potatoes and a secret batter recipe for his fish suppers.
However, he let slip that carbonated lemonade is the magic ingredient which helped him batter the competition in the National Fish and Chip Awards.
He said: “The prince was really interested in the fact that different recipes are used for fish suppers across Britain.
“He was very keen to know about the secret ingredient in my own recipe.
“Although a lot of people use cold sparkling water or lemon juice, it’s lemonade that I use myself.”
Zohaib, 25, who works at the Zero Plus Fish Bar, was joined by 22-year-old Carlyn Johnson – who works at Britain’s most northerly fish and chip shop, Frankie’s, in the Shetland Isles – to give the prince a taste of sustainably harvested haddock caught off Arbroath.
