Lawyer courts excitement in the Dakar Rally

A LAWYER is to put his day job on hold for a month to compete in the world's toughest endurance race.

Ten years ago, Paul Carlyle from Leith could not even ride a motorcycle, but he is now set to enter the notorious Dakar Rally in January.

The biking enthusiast will travel the equivalent of the distance between London and Edinburgh, off road, every day for more than a fortnight.

Mr Carlyle, 38, said it was a one-off opportunity to take part in the 5,600-mile marathon. He added: "Dakar is a test of endurance, speed and navigation as well as luck, only 40 per cent of the starting riders will finish each year and my target is to be one of them."

He will plot his progress during the event on his website, www.carlyledesertracing.com
