Hydro scheme set for big switch on

Scotland’s biggest hydro scheme – capable of powering over one million homes – is set to be given the green light by Highland planners.

Proposed for Coire Glas, near Spean Bridge, in Lochaber, the 600MW scheme would generate six times more electricity than the company’s £160 million plant at Glendoe.

Highland Council’s south planning applications committee will consider the proposal tomorrow. Officers have recommended the scheme should go ahead.

However there are 24 objectors who have registered their representations to the scheme by electricity firm Scottish & Southern Energy.

The Scottish Government will have the final say.
