Hotel development 'only way to save historic Odeon cinema'

A NEW hotel development is the only viable option for saving the historic Odeon cinema in Edinburgh, according to the developer behind the plans.

Speaking about the plans for the first time since his company Duddingston House Properties bought the South Clerk Street site six years ago, chief executive Bruce Hare said the hotel development was the only way to safeguard the building's future.

The proposals, which involve extensive renovation of the interior as well as the demolition of the cinema's B-listed auditorium, attracted opposition from local campaigners and Historic Scotland, and have been called in by the Scottish Government.

That has further delayed efforts to re-open the art-deco building, which was boarded up in 2003.

Mr Hare said: "The building will deteriorate unless it is brought back into use. We have to find an alternative use for it."
