Historic scheme seeks names to honour

A HERITAGE body is urging people to submit nominations for a plaque scheme that will see historic figures commemorated.

The figures will be celebrated with plaques either on the home where they lived, or on a building linked to their achievements.

Nominations to the Historic Scotland scheme, which was launched in August by Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop, close on October 12.

People are invited to submit an application form through Historic Scotland’s website with up to 1000 words explaining why their chosen person is appropriate.

There will be a maximum of 12 plaques awarded each year, which will be decided by an independent academic panel still to be named. Ms Hyslop said: “This is an excellent and very visual way of honouring historic figures who have made a great contribution to Scotland’s history and heritage.”

Students at all of Scotland’s art schools have also been invited to create a design for the plaque, in a competition which will see the winning entry used as the official plaque and the student receiving £500.
