Highland Council to switch street lights back on after “darker streets” scheme

HIGHLAND Council is set to switch the street lights back on following complaints from residents about a pilot “darker streets” scheme and concerns about its impact on public safety.

More than 30 streets in villages and towns were chosen to take part in trial schemes aimed at reducing the council’s annual £2 million street lighting bill.

But a report to go before a council committee on Thursday admits some of the trials met opposition from locals – including one woman’s claim that her home was broken into because street lights were switched off.

Officials say lights should be switched back on in areas with strong resistance to the scheme.
