Hero of Apartheid struggle in Scotland
ONE of South Africa’s most respected clergymen was speaking today at an international conference on deepening democracy.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu was addressing an audience of more than 400 delegates as a special guest speaker at the Commonwealth Local Government Forum conference in Aberdeen.
While it is not clear what tone his speech will take, it is thought, like many of his other presentations, it will move away from party politics and have a religious perspective.
Archbishop Tutu has been one of the leading figures in the fight against apartheid in South Africa and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in 1984.
His speech to delegates at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre was to mark the official end of the three-day conference which has seen local government ministers from across the globe unite in discussion and debate.
