Headteacher says university favours state school pupils
A HEADTEACHER has accused Edinburgh University of discriminating against private school pupils as part of a bid to fill lecture halls with students from less well-off backgrounds.
Peter Hogan, headmaster of Loretto School in Musselburgh, said university staff look more favourably on state school candidates and even suggested his pupils move to England because they can afford the fees.
From conversations with admissions staff he said “it’s been made very clear that those particular individuals were more interested in children from state schools than children from private schools”.
And he added: I’ve been afraid that if we make too much of a fuss then our children may be further disadvantaged, but actually, it appears with Edinburgh is that they don’t seem to be particularly motivated to be giving us fair and even-handed offers anyway.”
