A CUMBERNAULD secondary school, famous for its role in the cult Scottish film Gregory’s Girl, could be demolished under council plans.

Abronhill High School was the setting for some exterior scenes of the 1981 comedy, but faces closure along with Cumbernauld High School.

The demolition has been mooted in a bid to save North Lanarkshire Council over £1 million a year. North Lanarkshire Council learning and leisure services convener Jim Logue said the schools are currently “operating at just over half their potential volume”.

He said: “Both buildings are outdated and no longer appropriate for the modern curriculum.”

Gregory’s Girl is regarded as a British cult classic, and its writer and director Bill Forsyth won a BAFTA for the film’s screenplay.

North Lanarkshire Council’s proposals for a new school to replace the two buildings will be discussed at public meetings. The meetings will be held at Abronhill High on Wednesday, October 24, and at Cumbernauld High on October 25.
