Gigha cairn unveiled

THE 100 residents of Gigha started yesterday to construct a cairn to mark their takeover of the island.

The cairn is made from stones from around the world, with the first stone being laid by Jim Wallace, the deputy First Minister, who took it from the site of the new parliament building in Holyrood. He said: "Nothing could more clearly symbolise the importance of communities and central government working together than the stones that make up this cairn."

He added that running the island will not be easy, but residents can feel proud that they have taken on the challenge for themselves and for future generations.
