Gas leak forces 80 from homes in the Gorbals area of Glasgow

Around 80 residents were moved out of their homes for the night after a gas leak was detected in the street outside.

Scotland Gas Networks said the leak at Silverfir Court, in the Gorbals area of Glasgow, was reported yesterday morning by contractors working at flats in the area.

Residents from three blocks of flats, the majority of whom are said to be aged 80 and over, were removed from their properties and taken to a local community centre.

The damaged pipe has since been repaired, but a spokeswoman for the company last night said a “small, residual level of gas” was still coming up on safety readings.
