Further 12 cases of swine flu identified in Scotland

THE west of Scotland again provided most of the country's new cases of swine flu yesterday as the total rose by 12 to 549.

The Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS area contributed ten of the new cases, bringing its caseload to 368 – two-thirds of the Scottish total.

Seven patients with the virus across the country are being treated in hospital and another 518 possible cases are under investigation.

Yesterday's increase compared with seven on Thursday. The total cases across the UK reached nearly 2,000 yesterday, including 215 new ones south of the Border.

The World Health Organisation said the global figure had increased by more than 10 per cent in two days to 44,287. Argentina, Canada, Chile, China, Philippines and Thailand also reported large increases.

Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said the number of Scottish cases was likely to increase further over the next few days with the opening of new swabbing centres.
