Forth Road Bridge nuts to be replaced

WORKERS were scaling the heights yesterday, climbing more than 140 metres up the Forth Road Bridge's main suspension cable.

A temporary cable band is being lifted into position in preparation for vital work to replace 2000 heavy-duty nuts which were found to be cracked recently.

Bridge bosses have ordered an investigation after nine nuts used to secure bands to the structure's main cables proved to be faulty.

The work, to be carried out over the next few years, will cost an estimated 630,000.
