Former paper mill site in line for £70m boost
AMBITIOUS plans were announced yesterday to redevelop the final 40 hectares of land on the site of Aberdeenshire’s last paper mill to deliver a major boost to the local economy.
Almost 400 jobs were lost three years ago when the International Paper mill in Inverurie, the town’s biggest employer, closed.
But it has now been revealed that the Kirkwood Group is planning to potentially invest more than £70 million at the former mill site after buying the industrial, warehousing and office buildings at the giant complex.
First Minister Alex Salmond, who is also the MSP for Aberdeenshire East, said: “It is great news for Inverurie that the site is attracting keen interest from tenants as we seek to ensure the maximum benefit for the local economy.
“The site of the former mill is a strategically important employment location and has huge potential for jobs to be created.
“It is important that the local community once again benefits from the full utilisation of this site.”
