A Spanish fisherman is fighting for his life in hospital after suffering a serious head injury in a fall from a pier at a harbour.
The 52-year-old trawlerman was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness after he fell from the quayside, between the harbour wall and a boat, at Ullapool harbour in the early hours of this morning.
A Coastguard rescue helicopter based at Stornoway was used to fly the injured seaman from the Wester Ross harbour.
A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said: “Police were called to respond to reports that a man had fallen from the pier at Ullapool harbour at around 0130 this morning. A 52-year-old Spanish national was recovered from the water by his crew, also from Spain, and emergency services were alerted.”
He added: “The man suffered a head injury and was taken by the Stornoway coastguard helicopter to Raigmore Hospital where his condition is described as life threatening. There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.”
