First number plate in city sells for £397k
THE first car number plate ever to be issued in Edinburgh has sold for a staggering £397,500 at auction and will now take pride of place on a Skoda.
The sought-after registration mark "S1" had been estimated to fetch between 200,000 and 250,000 when it went under the hammer at Sotheby's annual Goodwood Revival Sale in Chichester yesterday.
After a lengthy telephone bidding battle, a buyer in the room eventually secured the registration number, to a round of applause.
The successful buyer, from the company Bold Registrations, said: "I believe that number plates in general are a good investment, even at this price. The registration number will remain in the UK and will be going onto an old red Skoda, which will be seen around the Midlands."
The plate originally belonged to Sir John HA MacDonald, who was the Lord Justice Clerk of Scotland from 1888 to 1919.
