Fire crews' 90 call-outs a day
RETAINED firefighters went on more than 90 call-outs a day last year, according to figures published ahead of a conference that will examine their role.
In Scotland, more than 3,300 men and women, or more than 40 per cent of the fire service workforce, are employed on the retained duty system, "on-call" from their homes or primary employers, with a further 700 responding as volunteers.
They attend about 30 per cent of emergency calls each year, and in 2008-9 attended 34,000 calls.
Community safety minister Fergus Ewing, who will open the event at Dunblane, said: "Every day men and women in the retained duty system step up to the mark to protect communities."
