Fault forces Wheel to close again

A FAULT has forced the Falkirk Wheel to close for the third time in a month.

Visitors were left waiting for several hours yesterday while engineers worked on the giant structure, which transfers boats between the Union Canal and the Forth & Clyde Canal.

Last week, about 80 people had their trip on the wheel cut short when it underwent emergency repairs after several bolts snapped on a rail along which its gondolas run.

A month earlier, one of the wheel’s lock gates became stuck.

Just days before it was opened by the Queen vandals attacked it, causing millions of gallons of water to flood the area and more than 500,000-worth of damage.

The wheel, a unique rotating boat lift which takes the place of canal lock systems, is a key part of the Millennium Link project which has re-opened the two canals. The scheme involved rebuilding a stretch of the Union Canal through Wester Hailes in Edinburgh.
